Acne Scar Revision
in Central Texas

Acne can be an embarrassing condition for many patients. Breakouts can be difficult to control, and patients often need to consult a dermatologist for treatment. Unfortunately, after controlling the acne, damage may already be done, and the patient may have multiple scars on their skin.

Some 80% of people between ages 11 and 30 will develop acne, and out of those people, around 95% will have scars to prove it. Acne scars can be more complex than surgical scars or some traumatic scars and often will require multimodality treatment to eliminate. This may include breaking up deep scar tissue, placing a filler in the area to keep it elevated, and later performing a procedure to help resurface the skin.

Specializing in plastic surgery from the collarbone up, Dr. Charles Guy and the professional team at Facial Plastic Surgery of Central Texas offer various procedures to help rejuvenate and repair the skin. Through these innovative services, patients with acne scars throughout central Texas can achieve a look that makes them more confident in their appearance. What Are Acne Scars?

Acne scars are the result of the body’s attempt to try and repair itself. It does that by forming new collagen fibers to fill the lesions created by acne. These repairs are performed by the body and usually aren’t as smooth and flawless as the original skin. When the body produces too much collagen to repair the lesion, the result is a mass of raised tissue on the skin’s surface. This is what’s called hypertrophic or keloid scarring.

Another common type of acne scarring is atrophic (depressed) scarring. This type of scarring occurs when there is a loss of tissue. While generally small, atrophic acne scars leave obvious holes or pits in the skin, causing patients to become unhappy with their appearance.

What to Expect During
an Acne Scar
Revision Procedure

Patients who choose to undergo acne scar repair will meet with the team at Facial Plastic Surgery of Central Texas at our office in Waco. Committed to patient education, Dr. Guy will walk patients through the procedure before beginning, detailing every step to make certain patients are informed and comfortable. At this time, patients are encouraged to ask any questions they may have.

The procedure is performed using local injected anesthesia to numb the area, preventing patients from feeling discomfort or pain. Some scars may require excision as they will not respond well to other treatments. Often a treatment will focus on breaking up the scars deep in the skin and then placing a filler (either a hyaluronic acid filler or using a micro or nano fat graft) in the area.

Once the fillers have set in and the skin is more even, skin resurfacing can be performed in the office a few weeks later. Occasionally, there will be a revision or touch-up procedure needed to obtain the desired cosmetic result. It’s common for patients to experience a little bruising in the area between sessions.
