Kybella

Kybella, also known as deoxycholic acid, is FDA approved to dissolve the fat that sometimes appears under the chin. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that is normally found in the gallbladder and is used to break down dietary fats. When injected into the fat pocket under the chin, it breaks down fat cells that are eventually removed by the body. As the fat cells are removed the skin can contract upwards under the chin to improve the jaw and neck lines. Kybella is recommended for moderate to severe submental fat pockets and is given in a series of injections that are spaced 4-6 weeks apart

What To Expect

  • Kybella is an office-based procedure that is given through a series of injections.
  • During each session, multiple injections will be given. The number of injections depends on the area and size of the fat pad that is targeted.
  • Medication can be placed in the area to help minimize the discomfort of the injections.
  • You will have some initial notable swelling that occurs after the injection that lasts 3-6 days. The swelling occurs from the initial breakdown of the fat cells causing an inflammatory response.
  • As the swelling goes down you will see the gradual improvement in area under the chin over the following 2-4 weeks.
  • It may take 3-6 sessions, spaced out every 4-6 weeks, in order to achieve the desired cosmetic result.
  • You can take Tylenol or Ibuprofen afterwards to help with the discomfort.
  • Ice packs to the area can also help some with the swelling and discomfort.
